Description
Flashing Devil Scorpionfish (Scorpaenopsis diabolus)
The Flashing Devil Scorpionfish is a dramatic and highly camouflaged marine predator with a broad, heavily textured body, mottled colouration and large pectoral fins that reveal vivid contrasting colours when displayed. Often remaining motionless against rubble or rockwork, it relies on camouflage before ambushing passing prey. This impressive species is best suited to experienced marine aquarists due to its predatory nature, substantial adult size and venomous dorsal spines.
Common Name:
Flashing Devil Scorpionfish, Devil Scorpionfish, False Stonefish
Scientific Name (Latin):
Scorpaenopsis diabolus
Maximum Size:
Approximately 30 cm
Water Type:
Marine
Origin / Natural Habitat:
The Flashing Devil Scorpionfish has a broad Indo-Pacific distribution extending from the Red Sea and East Africa to the Hawaiian Islands and French Polynesia, north to southern Japan and south to the Great Barrier Reef and New Caledonia. It inhabits reef flats, lagoons and seaward reefs, particularly rubble, weedy and coralline-rock bottoms, at depths of approximately 1–70 metres.
Water Parameters:
Temperature: 24–26°C
pH Range: 8.1–8.4
Salinity: SG 1.024–1.026
Nitrate: Low and stable
Ammonia/Nitrite: 0 ppm
Temperament:
Predatory
The Flashing Devil Scorpionfish is primarily an ambush predator rather than an actively aggressive fish. It spends long periods motionless before striking rapidly at appropriately sized prey.
Tankmates should therefore be chosen according to size rather than temperament alone. Any fish small enough to fit into its mouth should be considered at significant risk.
Diet:
Carnivore / Predatory
In nature, this species feeds on fish.
In the aquarium, offer appropriately sized meaty marine foods such as prawn, shrimp, silversides, squid and chunks of marine fish. Newly imported individuals may initially prefer live foods, but they should ideally be transitioned onto suitable frozen or prepared marine foods.
Avoid overfeeding, as scorpionfish have a relatively sedentary lifestyle compared with continuously active reef fish.
Minimum Tank Size:
Approximately 400 litres
Its potential adult length of around 30 cm, large mouth and need for suitable territory make a spacious aquarium advisable.
Behaviour & Activity:
The Flashing Devil Scorpionfish is a benthic ambush predator that spends much of its time resting motionless on or partly buried amongst rubble and substrate. Its highly textured body and mottled colouration provide exceptional camouflage.
When disturbed, it can suddenly spread its large pectoral fins to expose their brightly coloured inner surfaces, producing the distinctive “flashing” display from which its common name is derived.
Provide substantial rockwork, caves and open substrate areas where the fish can position itself naturally.
Reef Safe:
With Caution
The Flashing Devil Scorpionfish does not normally feed on coral tissue, so established corals are generally not its primary concern.
However, it is a powerful predator. Small reef fish and ornamental crustaceans may be consumed if they are suitable prey.
Its large size and sedentary behaviour also mean sufficient open space should be maintained around delicate coral structures.
Special Requirements or Care Notes:
This species possesses venomous dorsal spines capable of causing a painful injury. FishBase specifically records Scorpaenopsis diabolus as venomous and notes that its dorsal sting can cause significant pain.
Extreme care must therefore be taken whenever working inside the aquarium. Never attempt to handle the fish by hand, and always identify its location before moving rockwork or carrying out maintenance because its camouflage can make it extremely difficult to see.
Use suitable aquarium tools rather than placing hands close to the fish whenever possible.
A mature, stable aquarium with excellent filtration and oxygenation is recommended. Provide secure rockwork, caves and rubble areas that allow natural ambush behaviour.
Tankmates must be too large to swallow and should not be aggressive species likely to harass or damage the scorpionfish.
