The Deep Blue Goby is a striking freshwater goby admired for the intense blue to turquoise colouration shown by mature males, together with its streamlined body and active grazing behaviour. Peaceful, unusual and highly attractive in the right setup, this species is best suited to mature aquariums with strong oxygenation, clean flowing water and plenty of algae-covered rock surfaces. It makes an excellent choice for aquarists looking for a distinctive riverine species with fascinating natural behaviour.

The Deep Blue Goby originates from clear, fast-flowing streams in tropical parts of Asia and the western Pacific.

It is typically associated with shallow, well-oxygenated waters containing smooth rocks, stones and hard surfaces covered with algae and biofilm.

The Deep Blue Goby is generally peaceful towards other suitable community fish.

Males may display towards one another, particularly around preferred grazing areas, but serious aggression is usually limited when sufficient space and rockwork are available.

Diet:

The Deep Blue Goby naturally spends much of its time grazing algae, diatoms and biofilm from submerged rocks and other hard surfaces.

A mature aquarium containing established algae growth is highly beneficial.

Supplement natural grazing with spirulina-based foods, algae wafers, specialist herbivore foods and other finely textured plant-based foods.

Minimum Tank Size:

A longer aquarium with substantial floor space is preferable, particularly where several individuals are being maintained.

Behaviour & Activity:
The Deep Blue Goby spends much of its time resting on and moving between rocks while grazing continuously across hard surfaces.

Its adapted pelvic fins allow it to maintain position in flowing water and move confidently across smooth stones.

Provide a combination of open rocky areas, sheltered spaces and moderate to strong water movement.

Mature males can display particularly intense blue colouration when settled and in good condition.

The Deep Blue Goby is well suited to peaceful river-style community aquariums.

Suitable tankmates include small rasboras, danios, peaceful loaches, small rainbowfish and other non-aggressive species that appreciate clean, well-oxygenated water.

Avoid large, predatory or highly territorial bottom-dwelling fish.

Special Requirements or Care Notes:
This species is best maintained in a mature aquarium with abundant natural algae and biofilm.

Strong oxygenation and clean, well-filtered water are particularly important.

Provide smooth rocks, pebbles and other hard surfaces where algae can develop naturally.

Avoid keeping the aquarium excessively sterile, as natural grazing material forms an important part of the diet.

A secure lid is recommended, as gobies may climb or jump when startled.

Stable water chemistry and regular partial water changes are important for long-term health.

Because colouration can vary with sex, maturity, mood and condition, not every individual will display the same intensity of blue.
