Description
Clown Tang (Acanthurus lineatus)
The Clown Tang, also known as the Lined Surgeonfish, is a bold, high-energy marine tang recognised for its vivid yellow-orange body crossed with electric blue horizontal striping. In the wild it inhabits exposed reef zones with strong water movement, and in aquaria it is constantly on the move, making it a very impressive display fish. Due to its size, territorial behaviour and need for excellent water quality and swimming room, it is best suited to large, mature marine systems run by experienced aquarists.
Common Name:
Clown Tang, also commonly referred to as the Lined Surgeonfish.
Scientific Name (Latin):
Acanthurus lineatus
Maximum Size:
Up to 38 cm in captivity.
Water Type:
Marine.
Origin / Natural Habitat:
Widespread across the Indo-Pacific, this species is associated with surge zones of exposed seaward reefs and rocky substrates. Adults are commonly found in shallow gutters, while juveniles are more solitary and secretive over shallow rubble areas.
Water Parameters:
Temperature: 22–26°C
pH Range: 8.1–8.4
Salinity: 1.020–1.025 SG
Temperament:
Semi-aggressive to aggressive. This species is territorial and can be especially hostile towards other tangs, surgeonfish and similarly shaped tankmates, particularly in smaller systems.
Diet:
Herbivorous / algivorous. It should be offered a diet rich in marine algae and seaweed, with regular grazing opportunities. Wild diet information also notes some crustaceans may be taken.
Minimum Tank Size:
946 litres minimum.
Behaviour & Activity:
A very active, open-water grazer that is almost continually in motion. Large males defend feeding territories and harems in the wild, while adults may also form schools.
Reef Safe:
Reef Safe
It is often sold as reef safe, but some guidance notes it may pick at small mobile or sessile invertebrates if underfed. In a reef system, monitor carefully around delicate invertebrates and keep feeding consistent.
Special Requirements or Care Notes:
Best kept in a large, mature aquarium with very clean, well-oxygenated water, ample swimming room and rockwork for grazing and shelter. Like other surgeonfish, it should be handled with care because of the sharp caudal spines at the tail base.
Suitable for:
Experienced fishkeepers
Availability:
Occasional in trade.
