Clown Loach (Chromobotia macracanthus)

The Clown Loach is a highly popular and distinctive freshwater fish recognised for its bright orange body, bold black vertical bands and contrasting red to orange fins. Intelligent, social and full of character, it is best kept in groups where individuals can display their natural hierarchy, playfulness and resting behaviour. Although juveniles are often sold at a small size, this species grows considerably larger and requires a spacious, well-filtered aquarium for long-term care.

Origin / Natural Habitat:
The Clown Loach originates from freshwater river systems in Indonesia and is associated with flowing rivers, tributaries and seasonally flooded habitats.

It naturally occupies environments containing submerged wood, rocks, leaf litter, shaded areas and plenty of sheltered spaces.

Clown Loaches are generally peaceful and sociable fish that are best kept in groups.

They establish a natural social hierarchy and can become stressed or withdrawn when maintained alone.

Diet:
Omnivore

Offer a varied diet including high-quality sinking pellets or wafers, frozen or live bloodworm, brine shrimp, daphnia and other suitably sized meaty foods.

Vegetable-based foods and spirulina can also be included regularly.

Clown Loaches may also consume small snails where available.

Minimum Tank Size:
Approximately 500 litres for a long-term group

Juvenile Clown Loaches can initially be maintained in smaller aquariums, but adults require substantial swimming space and a large footprint.

Behaviour & Activity:
The Clown Loach is an active and social bottom-dwelling fish that spends much of its time exploring the lower areas of the aquarium.

Individuals may rest together in caves, under wood or in unusual positions, including lying on their sides, which can be completely normal behaviour.

They may also produce audible clicking sounds, particularly during feeding or social interactions.

Keep in groups of at least five individuals, with larger groups preferred where aquarium size allows.

Community Suitability:
Community Fish

The Clown Loach is well suited to larger peaceful community aquariums.

Suitable tankmates include larger tetras, barbs, rainbowfish, peaceful catfish and other non-aggressive species that tolerate warm water.

Avoid highly aggressive tankmates or very small aquariums where territorial pressure and overcrowding may become a problem.

Special Requirements or Care Notes:
Clown Loaches should be kept in groups and should not be maintained as solitary fish.

Provide plenty of caves, driftwood, smooth rocks and shaded hiding places alongside open swimming areas.

Use smooth sand or fine rounded gravel to protect the sensitive barbels around the mouth.

Strong biological filtration and excellent oxygenation are important, particularly as adults become large and produce a significant biological load.

Stable water chemistry and regular partial water changes are essential.

Clown Loaches can be sensitive to poor water quality and may be susceptible to external parasites, so careful observation and quarantine are recommended when introducing new specimens.

Their adult size and long lifespan should be considered before purchase, as they are a substantial long-term commitment.
