Description
Basic Care Sheet for a Scorpion Gecko (Pristurus carteri)
Habitat:
1. Enclosure: A 10-20 gallon tank is sufficient for a single Scorpion Gecko. These geckos are terrestrial but enjoy climbing, so provide some vertical space and structures.
2. Substrate: Use a sand or sand/soil mix, as they are native to arid environments. Avoid substrates that are too moist or that the gecko could ingest.
3. Temperature: Maintain a temperature gradient with a basking area around 85-90°F (29-32°C) and a cooler area around 70-75°F (21-24°C). Use a heat lamp or under-tank heater to achieve this.
4. Humidity: Low humidity is preferred, typically around 30-40%. However, provide a small water dish and mist lightly occasionally.
Diet:
1. Primary Diet: Insects such as crickets, mealworms, and small roaches. Ensure the insects are gut-loaded (fed nutritious foods) before feeding.
2. Supplements: Dust food with calcium and vitamin D3 supplements to prevent nutritional deficiencies.
3. Feeding Frequency: Feed adults every other day and juveniles more frequently, adjusting the amount based on the gecko’s size and condition.
Water:
1. Hydration: Always provide a shallow dish of fresh water, even though Scorpion Geckos don’t often drink standing water.
Health:
1. Regular Health Checks: Monitor for signs of dehydration, weight loss, or lethargy. Healthy Scorpion Geckos are active and alert with clear, bright eyes.
Social and Environmental Enrichment:
1. Decor: Provide hiding spots using rocks, wood, or commercially available hides.
2. Lighting: While not essential, a low-level UVB light can be beneficial for overall health.
