Description

CB 2023 Normal Royal Python Male

Scientific Name: Python regius

Difficulty Level: Beginner/Intermediate

Size (Total Adult Length): 3-5ft generally but smaller/larger animals can
occasionally be seen.
There are hundreds of colour and pattern variations (morphs) in Royal pythons meaning
there is always one to suit everybody.

Housing:
-For a juvenile, the enclosure should be large enough to provide a thermal gradient, a
minimum of two hides (one at the cool side and one on the warm side) this allows your
snake to feel secure whilst still being able to thermoregulate. The enclosure would also
require a water bowl and some decor ie branches, cork bark, fake plants.
-For an adult we would recommend a minimum of a 4ftx2ftx2ft vivarium.
-Suitable substrates include coco husk, orchid bark and mulch which hold humidity well.
Aspen can also be used.
-Maintain a temperature gradient with a basking temperature of around 32/35°C (90/95°F) and a cooler end about 24-27°C (75-80°F). Night time temperatures can be allowed to drop to 22°C. Temperatures should always be controlled by a thermostat.
- Humidity should be kept between 50-60%, this can be achieved by regular light misting, slightly increased during shedding periods.
- A shade-dweller UV light should also be offered as this is beneficial to your snake.
-Care must be taken to not keep the snake on wet/soaked bedding as this can lead to
respiratory infections, skin conditions and also creates the perfect environment for bacteria.

Diet:
- Feed with appropriately sized rodents, usually mice or rats. Juveniles typically eat weekly, while adults may eat every 10-14 days. Adult royals do have a tendency to go on a prolonged “fast” and refuse meals. This is usually of no concern as long as the snake is not losing weight and is closely monitored/recorded. As royals have heat sensing pits, merely gently heating the rodent offered can at times be enough to get a feeding response from problem feeders.
- Always provide access to fresh, clean water.

Handling and Behaviour:
- Royal Pythons are known for their shy and docile nature and have a tendency, when feeling threatened or nervous, to coil into a ball hence the nickname “Ball python”. Gradually acclimate them to handling for short but regular periods to reduce stress.
- Avoid handling during shedding and for 48 hours after feeding to prevent regurgitation.

General Care:
Inspect the enclosure daily and spot clean as necessary. Enclosures should regularly be disinfected with a reptile safe disinfectant and substrate replaced. Monitor your snake's health, watching for signs of scale/shedding issues, obesity, refusal to eat, lethargy, respiratory issues or other health concerns. Creating an enriching environment with hides and structures can promote natural behaviours and ensure your snake's well-being.
