Description
Carberryi Anthias (Nemanthias carberryi)
The Carberryi Anthias is a graceful, colourful mid-water anthias known for its soft orange to pink body tones, yellow highlights and elegant finnage. In the wild it is found in groups off outer reef slopes in the western Indian Ocean, and in the aquarium it brings constant movement and a more natural schooling feel when kept correctly. It is a peaceful species, but like many anthias it needs a mature system, frequent feeding and calm tankmates to do well long term.
Common Name:
Carberryi Anthias. It is also commonly known as the Threadfin Anthias.
Scientific Name (Latin):
Nemanthias carberryi
Maximum Size:
Up to 13 cm in length.
Water Type:
Marine.
Origin / Natural Habitat:
Widespread through the western Indian Ocean, reaching east to the Maldives and south to South Africa. It is a reef-associated species found on outer reef slopes, usually at around 4–30 metres, most often 10–30 metres.
Water Parameters:
Temperature: 22–26°C
pH Range: 8.1–8.4
Salinity: 1.020–1.025 SG
Temperament:
Generally peaceful, although males or similar individuals can become pushy towards one another if space is limited. This species is best kept with other calm marine fish rather than aggressive or highly boisterous tankmates.
Diet:
Carnivorous / planktivorous. It naturally feeds on zooplankton and does best on a varied diet of small meaty marine foods such as mysis, enriched brineshrimp, cyclops and similar plankton-sized fare. Frequent feeding is important, especially when newly introduced.
Minimum Tank Size:
300 litres minimum for long-term care, though larger aquaria are strongly preferred for groups. If kept as a shoal, extra swimming space and more structure are important.
Behaviour & Activity:
An active mid-water swimmer that does best in small groups or harems. In larger systems, one male with several females is the most natural arrangement, while smaller aquaria are better suited to a single specimen or pair. It also benefits from open swimming space combined with rocky hiding places.
Reef Safe:
Reef Safe
This species is generally regarded as safe with corals and most reef invertebrates, making it a very good choice for a peaceful reef aquarium.
Special Requirements or Care Notes:
This species does best in a well-established aquarium with stable water quality, good hiding places and frequent small feeds. It can be delicate during acclimation, and live foods can improve initial success with reluctant feeders. A tight-fitting lid is also recommended, as this fish is known to jump from open aquaria.
Suitable for:
Intermediate to Experienced fishkeepers. It is not usually considered difficult once established, but it does require preparation, feeding consistency and a settled marine system.
Availability:
Occasional in trade. This is an inference based on current retailer listings showing it is available, but not as routinely encountered as some of the more common anthias species.
All images are a visual representation of the fish you will receive, made to be as accurate as possible. Please note that Mother Nature is a wonderful thing, and variation in patterns and colours will occur — that is part of the unique beauty of these animals.
