Description

Sarare Cory (Corydoras sarareensis)

The Sarare Cory is a beautifully patterned long-snouted cory from Brazil, appreciated for its elegant shape, peaceful nature and suitability for a well-planned community aquarium. It has a more streamlined profile than many rounder cory species, and mature males develop the slightly more pointed finnage typical of many long-snouted corys. In the aquarium it is an active bottom-dweller that does best in groups, where it will spend much of the day sifting the substrate and exploring shaded areas.

Common Name:
Sarare Cory. In older hobby use it was also known by the code C023.

Scientific Name (Latin):
Corydoras sarareensis

Maximum Size:
Males reach around 6 cm, while females grow slightly larger at around 6.5 cm.

Water Type:
Freshwater

Origin / Natural Habitat:
Native to Brazil, specifically the Rio Sararé, a tributary of the upper Rio Guaporé in Mato Grosso.

Water Parameters:
Temperature: 22–26°C
pH Range: 6.0–7.5

Temperament:
Generally peaceful and well suited to a calm community aquarium. Like most corys, it is social and should not be kept on its own long term.

Diet:
Omnivorous bottom-feeder. Offer a varied diet of quality sinking foods such as tablets, granules and wafers, alongside frozen or live foods like bloodworm, daphnia, white worm and other small protein-rich foods.

Minimum Tank Size:
A practical long-term recommendation is at least 90 litres, with a larger footprint preferred if keeping a proper group.

Behaviour & Activity:
This is an active bottom-dweller that spends much of the day searching through the substrate for food. As a longer-snouted species, it especially appreciates being able to root gently through soft sand. Like other corys, it may also visit the surface occasionally to gulp air.

Aquarium Category:
Community Fish
Best kept in a group of at least 6 with other peaceful, similarly sized community fish. Good companions include small to medium tetras, rasboras, danios, peaceful dwarf cichlids and other calm bottom-dwellers. Watch out for large predatory fish, aggressive cichlids and rough or overly boisterous tankmates, as this species is gentle and relies on group confidence rather than aggression. It is also best avoided with fish that dominate feeding time too heavily, as corys still need food to reach the bottom.

Special Requirements or Care Notes:
A soft sand substrate is strongly recommended so the fish can search naturally without risking damage to its barbels or snout. Smooth rounded gravel can work if kept very clean, but sharp gravel should be avoided. Add driftwood, plants and shaded cover around the edges, while leaving some open ground for foraging and swimming.

Suitable for:
Beginner to Intermediate fishkeepers

Availability:
Occasional in trade
