Description

Bumble Bee Snail (Engina mendicaria)

The Bumble Bee Snail is a small and attractive marine snail recognised for its bold alternating black and yellow to cream bands. Unlike larger algae-focused clean-up crew snails, this species spends much of its time searching through rockwork and crevices for leftover food, detritus and small meaty food sources. Its compact size allows it to reach areas that larger snails may miss, making it an interesting addition to mature marine aquariums when its predatory and scavenging behaviour is taken into account.

Common Name:
Bumble Bee Snail

Scientific Name (Latin):
Engina mendicaria

Maximum Size:
Approximately 2–2.5 cm

Water Type:
Marine

Origin / Natural Habitat:
The Bumble Bee Snail occurs in tropical Indo-Pacific marine environments and is associated with coral reefs, rocky shorelines and rubble-rich areas.

It commonly moves through cracks, crevices and rocky substrate while searching for small food items and organic material.

Water Parameters:
Temperature: 24–26°C
pH Range: 8.1–8.4
Salinity: SG 1.024–1.026
Nitrate: Low and stable
Copper: Must be avoided

Temperament:
Peaceful / Opportunistic Predator

The Bumble Bee Snail is generally peaceful towards fish and corals but is an opportunistic feeder rather than a dedicated herbivorous algae grazer.

It may prey on very small worms, tiny molluscs and other vulnerable micro-invertebrates encountered within the rockwork or substrate.

Diet:
Carnivore / Omnivorous Scavenger

The Bumble Bee Snail feeds primarily on leftover meaty foods, detritus, carrion and small benthic organisms.

It should not be relied upon as a primary algae-control snail.

In very clean aquariums, supplement its diet with small amounts of sinking marine foods, finely chopped seafood or other suitable meaty foods.

Minimum Tank Size:
Approximately 30 litres

Aquarium maturity, stable water chemistry and the availability of suitable food are more important than overall tank volume.

Behaviour & Activity:
The Bumble Bee Snail spends much of its time moving through rockwork, rubble and narrow crevices in search of food.

Its small size allows it to reach confined areas that larger clean-up crew snails cannot easily access.

It may be more active during quieter periods or after food has been introduced to the aquarium.

Reef Safe:
Reef Safe with Caution

The Bumble Bee Snail does not normally damage healthy corals and is generally compatible with established reef aquariums.

However, because it is an opportunistic carnivorous scavenger, very small worms, molluscs and other vulnerable micro-invertebrates may occasionally be consumed.

For this reason, it is best considered reef safe with caution rather than completely harmless to all invertebrate life.

Special Requirements or Care Notes:
Provide a mature marine aquarium with established rockwork and plenty of crevices for natural foraging.

Do not purchase this species primarily for algae control, as its diet is considerably more carnivorous than that of typical Turbo, Trochus or Astraea snails.

Stable salinity and water chemistry are important, and careful acclimation is recommended.

Copper-based medications must be avoided, as copper can be highly toxic to marine snails and other invertebrates.

Monitor food availability in very clean aquariums and supplement with small meaty foods where necessary.

Avoid housing it with fish or invertebrates known to prey heavily on small snails.

Suitable for:
Beginner to Intermediate
