Description
Bright Green Centre Elegance (Catalaphyllia jardinei)
Bright Green Centre Elegance is a beautiful LPS coral admired for its broad fleshy mantle, flowing tentacles and vivid green central colouration. With its graceful movement and bold reef presence, this coral makes an impressive feature piece in a well-established marine aquarium, especially when placed where it has room to expand fully.
Common Name:
Bright Green Centre Elegance, Elegance Coral, Wonder Coral
Scientific Name (Latin):
Catalaphyllia jardinei
Coral Type:
LPS Coral
Growth Form:
Large fleshy polyp coral with an elongated skeletal base, expanded mantle and long flowing tentacles.
Water Type:
Marine
Origin / Natural Habitat:
Elegance corals are found across Indo-Pacific reef environments, often occurring in lagoonal areas, sandy zones, seagrass beds and lower reef habitats where they receive moderate light and gentle, indirect water movement.
Water Parameters:
Temperature: 24–26°C
pH Range: 8.1–8.4
Salinity: SG 1.024–1.026
Alkalinity: 7–10 dKH
Calcium: 400–450 ppm
Magnesium: 1250–1350 ppm
Nitrate: Low but detectable
Phosphate: Low but detectable
Lighting:
LOW TO MEDIUM
Bright Green Centre Elegance generally does best under low to medium reef lighting. Avoid placing it directly under intense light when first introduced, as sudden exposure can cause retraction or tissue stress. Gradual acclimation is recommended if moving it into brighter areas.
Flow:
LOW TO MEDIUM
Provide gentle to moderate, indirect flow that allows the fleshy mantle and tentacles to move naturally without being forced against the skeleton. Strong direct flow should be avoided, as it can damage the delicate tissue or prevent full expansion.
Placement:
Place on the sandbed or a very stable lower area of the aquarium where the coral has room to expand fully. Avoid sharp rockwork touching the tissue and leave generous spacing from neighbouring corals, as Elegance corals can extend significantly once settled.
Temperament / Aggression:
Aggressive
Elegance corals have a powerful sting and can damage nearby corals with their long tentacles. Provide plenty of space around the coral and avoid placing it close to delicate SPS, soft corals or other LPS corals that may come into contact with the tentacles.
Feeding:
Photosynthetic, but benefits from feeding
Bright Green Centre Elegance receives energy from light through its symbiotic zooxanthellae, but it benefits from occasional feeding. Suitable foods include small pieces of mysis, enriched meaty marine foods, LPS pellets and finely chopped seafood. Feed sparingly and avoid oversized foods that may be difficult for the coral to digest.
Growth Rate:
Slow to moderate
In a stable reef aquarium, Elegance corals usually focus on healthy tissue expansion rather than rapid skeletal growth. Good colour, regular inflation and steady feeding response are positive signs of long-term health.
Special Requirements or Care Notes:
Elegance corals require careful placement, stable water quality and protection from tissue damage. Avoid strong direct flow, sharp rock edges and repeated handling. Maintain low but detectable nutrients, stable alkalinity and consistent salinity. Inspect carefully before introduction and use coral dips where appropriate. Watch for tissue recession, excessive retraction or brown jelly infections, as these can progress quickly in stressed LPS corals.
Suitable for:
Intermediate reefkeepers
