The Blueface Angelfish is a spectacular large marine angelfish prized for its vivid blue facial markings, bright yellow eye mask and intricate blue-and-yellow scale patterning across the body. Juveniles look dramatically different from adults, developing their characteristic blue facial colour and yellow fins as they mature. Intelligent, bold and highly territorial once established, this species is best suited to large, mature marine aquariums with experienced care.

Origin / Natural Habitat:
The Blueface Angelfish occurs throughout the Indo-Pacific, from the Maldives eastwards to Vanuatu, north to the Yaeyama Islands, with records from Palau and Micronesia.

It inhabits coral-rich lagoons, channels and outer reef slopes, often remaining close to caves and substantial reef structure at depths of approximately 5–30 metres. Juveniles are more commonly associated with shallow inshore caves where algae growth is present.

The Blueface Angelfish is generally confident and can become strongly territorial as it matures.

It is usually best kept as the only large Pomacanthus angelfish unless the aquarium is exceptionally spacious and introductions are carefully planned. Smaller or timid tankmates may be intimidated by established adults.

In nature, the Blueface Angelfish feeds heavily on sponges, tunicates and other encrusting reef organisms.

In the aquarium, provide a varied diet including specialist marine angelfish preparations containing sponge, quality marine pellets, spirulina, nori, frozen mysis, chopped prawn and other marine-based foods.

Several smaller meals throughout the day are preferable and help maintain healthy body condition and strong colouration.

With an adult length approaching 38 cm and a highly active, territorial nature, the Blueface Angelfish requires a large aquarium with substantial horizontal swimming room and extensive rockwork.

Behaviour & Activity:
The Blueface Angelfish is an active daytime swimmer that spends much of its time exploring reef structure and searching rock surfaces for food.

In nature, adults are usually solitary and remain around coral-rich reef environments with caves and overhangs.

Provide a combination of substantial open swimming areas and large, secure caves where the fish can retreat.

Juveniles undergo a dramatic colour transformation as they mature. Adults develop a blue head with a bright yellow eye mask, yellow fins and a network-like blue and yellow pattern across the body.

Reef Safe:
With Caution

The Blueface Angelfish should be considered reef safe with caution.

Its natural diet includes sponges, tunicates and other encrusting organisms, and aquarium specimens may nip at fleshy LPS corals, soft corals, zoanthids and clam mantles.

Individual behaviour varies considerably, but this species is not considered reliably safe for delicate coral displays.

Special Requirements or Care Notes:
Provide a large, mature marine aquarium with extensive rockwork, caves and open swimming space.

A varied diet containing sponge-based foods is particularly important for long-term health.

Avoid keeping multiple large angelfish together unless the aquarium provides exceptional space and numerous visual barriers.

Strong filtration, good oxygenation and stable water chemistry are essential because this species becomes large and creates a significant biological load.

Newly introduced fish should be observed closely to ensure they begin feeding consistently. Careful quarantine is also recommended, as large marine angelfish can be susceptible to external parasites and transport-related stress.

This species should only be purchased with its substantial adult size and long-term space requirements fully considered.
