Description

Black Ribbon Eel (Rhinomuraena quaesita)

The Black Ribbon Eel is a striking and highly specialised marine eel recognised for its extremely slender body, elongated nostrils and dramatic black colouration. The black phase is typically associated with juvenile or transitional individuals, with colour changing as the eel matures. Beautiful but demanding, this species is best suited to experienced marine aquarists who can provide a secure aquarium, suitable hiding places and carefully managed feeding.

Common Name:
Black Ribbon Eel, Ribbon Eel

Scientific Name (Latin):
Rhinomuraena quaesita

Maximum Size:
Approximately 90–120 cm

Water Type:
Marine

Origin / Natural Habitat:
The Black Ribbon Eel occurs in tropical Indo-Pacific reef environments and is typically associated with sandy or rubble-covered areas close to coral reefs and rocky structure.

It usually spends much of its time concealed within holes, crevices or burrows, extending only the head and front of the body while watching for passing prey.

Water Parameters:
Temperature: 24–26°C
pH Range: 8.1–8.4
Salinity: SG 1.024–1.026
Nitrate: Low and stable
Ammonia/Nitrite: 0 ppm

Temperament:
Peaceful / Predatory

The Black Ribbon Eel is generally not aggressive towards fish too large to swallow.

However, smaller fish and crustaceans may be viewed as prey.

It is best housed with calm, suitably sized marine fish that will not harass or compete aggressively with it.

Diet:
Carnivore / Predator

The Black Ribbon Eel naturally feeds on small fish and crustaceans.

In the aquarium, newly introduced specimens can be difficult to feed and may initially refuse prepared foods.

Offer suitably sized pieces of prawn, shrimp, squid or marine fish using feeding tongs close to the eel's shelter.

Patience is often required when transitioning the eel onto non-live foods.

Minimum Tank Size:
Approximately 400 litres

A spacious aquarium with secure rockwork, caves and suitable retreat areas is strongly recommended.

Behaviour & Activity:
The Black Ribbon Eel is a secretive species that typically spends much of its time hidden within rockwork or a burrow.

It often remains with only its head exposed while watching its surroundings.

Once settled, it may become more visible around feeding time and during quieter periods.

Its long, ribbon-like body allows it to move through surprisingly small openings and crevices.

Reef Safe:
With Caution

The Black Ribbon Eel does not normally damage healthy coral tissue.

However, small fish, shrimp and other suitably sized mobile invertebrates may be eaten.

It is therefore best considered reef safe with caution.

Special Requirements or Care Notes:
A tightly sealed aquarium is absolutely essential, as Ribbon Eels are exceptional escape artists and can pass through very small openings.

All gaps around pipework, cables and aquarium lids should be securely covered.

Provide extensive rockwork with narrow caves, crevices and sheltered areas where the eel can retreat.

New specimens should be monitored carefully to ensure they begin feeding, as this species can be difficult to establish in captivity.

Avoid aggressive or highly boisterous tankmates that may intimidate the eel or prevent it from feeding successfully.

Stable water chemistry, excellent filtration and good oxygenation are important for long-term care.

Because of its specialised feeding requirements and tendency to escape, this species is best maintained by experienced marine aquarists.
