Description
Barbatus Cory (Scleromystax barbatus)
The Barbatus Cory is a larger, more distinctive cory-type catfish from south-eastern Brazil, known for its longer snout, bold patterning and, in mature males, the characteristic cheek bristles that give it a more rugged look than most standard corys. It is a peaceful bottom-dweller, but it is slightly more specialised than many common cory species because it prefers cooler, well-oxygenated water and a mature aquarium with consistently high water quality.
Common Name:
Barbatus Cory. It is also commonly known as the Bearded Cory or Banded Corydoras.
Scientific Name (Latin):
Scleromystax barbatus
Older synonym: Corydoras barbatus
Maximum Size:
Up to 9.8 cm standard length, with adult males often appearing especially large and robust for a cory-type catfish.
Water Type:
Freshwater
Origin / Natural Habitat:
Native to coastal river systems from Rio de Janeiro to Santa Catarina in Brazil, where it inhabits cooler freshwater habitats with good oxygen levels.
Water Parameters:
Temperature: 18–25°C
pH Range: 5.5–7.0
Hardness: up to 15 dH
Temperament:
Generally peaceful, though it is a larger and stronger cory-type catfish than many aquarists expect. It is social and should be kept with other calm fish rather than aggressive or highly boisterous species.
Diet:
Omnivorous bottom-feeder. Offer a varied diet of sinking foods such as pellets, granules and wafers, alongside frozen or live foods like bloodworm, daphnia and other small protein-rich foods.
Minimum Tank Size:
A practical long-term recommendation is at least 120 litres, with a wider tank footprint preferred because this species should be kept in a group and spends most of its time along the bottom.
Behaviour & Activity:
This is an active bottom-dweller that spends much of the day searching through the substrate for food. Like other cory-type catfish, it may also rise to the surface occasionally to gulp air. Mature males are especially impressive, developing longer fins and the beard-like cheek bristles that make the species so distinctive.
Aquarium Category:
Semi-Aggressive / Specialist
Best kept with peaceful, medium-sized community fish that enjoy cooler, clean, well-oxygenated water. Good companions include other calm subtropical species and sturdier peaceful bottom-dwellers. Watch out for very warm-water tropical fish, aggressive cichlids and rough, overly boisterous tankmates, as this species is peaceful but does have more specialised environmental needs than many standard corys. It is also best kept in a group of at least 5–6, as small numbers can leave them less settled.
Special Requirements or Care Notes:
A fine sand substrate is strongly recommended, although smooth rounded gravel can also work if kept very clean. Good oxygenation is important, and this species is better suited to cooler water than many common tropical corys. Provide shaded areas, wood, plants or caves, and leave enough access to the surface for normal air-breathing behaviour.
Suitable for:
Intermediate fishkeepers
