Description

Atomic Branching Frogspawn (Euphyllia divisa)

Atomic Branching Frogspawn is a colourful LPS coral prized for its bright, fleshy polyps and flowing tentacle movement. Its branching skeleton makes it an attractive choice for adding height, movement and vibrant colour to a reef aquarium, while its swaying polyps create a natural, eye-catching display under reef lighting.

Common Name:
Atomic Branching Frogspawn, Branching Frogspawn Coral, Frogspawn Coral, Euphyllia Coral

Scientific Name (Latin):
Euphyllia divisa

Coral Type:
LPS Coral

Growth Form:
Branching skeletal growth with large fleshy polyps and rounded, frogspawn-like tentacle tips.

Water Type:
Marine

Origin / Natural Habitat:
Frogspawn corals are found across Indo-Pacific reef habitats, often growing on reef slopes, sheltered lagoons and mixed reef areas where they receive moderate light and gentle to moderate water movement.

Water Parameters:
Temperature: 24–26°C
pH Range: 8.1–8.4
Salinity: SG 1.024–1.026
Alkalinity: 7–10 dKH
Calcium: 400–450 ppm
Magnesium: 1250–1350 ppm
Nitrate: Low but detectable
Phosphate: Low but detectable

Lighting:
MEDIUM
Atomic Branching Frogspawn generally does best under moderate reef lighting. Avoid placing it directly under very intense light without acclimation, as sudden increases can cause retraction or bleaching. Gradual light acclimation is recommended when moving it into a new aquarium.

Flow:
LOW TO MEDIUM
Provide gentle to moderate, indirect flow that allows the polyps to sway naturally without being blasted. Too much direct flow can cause the fleshy tissue to pull back against the skeleton, which may lead to irritation or tissue damage.

Placement:
Place on lower to middle rockwork where it has room to expand fully. Ensure the branching skeleton is secure and allow generous space around the coral, as the polyps can inflate significantly and may sting neighbouring corals.

Temperament / Aggression:
Semi-aggressive
Frogspawn corals can sting nearby corals and may extend sweeper tentacles, especially after lights out or when competing for space. Leave clear spacing around the colony and avoid placing it too close to delicate SPS, soft corals or other LPS corals.

Feeding:
Photosynthetic, but benefits from feeding
Atomic Branching Frogspawn receives much of its energy from light, but it can benefit from occasional target feeding. Suitable foods include small mysis, fine meaty coral foods, LPS pellets and enriched reef foods. Feed sparingly and avoid allowing food to sit on the tissue for long periods.

Growth Rate:
Moderate
In a stable reef aquarium, branching Frogspawn can gradually produce new heads along its skeleton and develop into a fuller display over time. Consistent calcium, alkalinity and magnesium levels are important for healthy skeletal growth.

Special Requirements or Care Notes:
Maintain stable parameters and avoid sudden changes in alkalinity, salinity or lighting. Keep the coral away from strong direct flow and allow space for full polyp extension. Frogspawn corals can be sensitive to tissue damage, brown jelly infections and rough handling, so inspect carefully before introduction and use coral dips where appropriate. Good water quality, moderate nutrients and steady flow around the polyps will help reduce detritus build-up and support long-term health.

Suitable for:
Beginner to Intermediate reefkeepers

Availability:
Regularly available in the coral trade
