Description

Assorted Betta (Betta splendens)

The Assorted Betta is a colourful and highly distinctive freshwater fish admired for its vibrant appearance, flowing fins and engaging personality. Selectively bred in a wide range of colours, patterns and fin types, no two individuals are exactly alike. Best known for the spectacular appearance of mature males, Betta splendens can make an excellent centrepiece fish when provided with warm, calm water, gentle filtration and carefully selected tankmates.

Common Name:
Assorted Betta, Siamese Fighting Fish

Scientific Name (Latin):
Betta splendens

Maximum Size:
Approximately 6–7 cm

Water Type:
Freshwater

Origin / Natural Habitat:
The Assorted Betta is a selectively bred ornamental form of Betta splendens.

Wild Betta splendens originate from Southeast Asia, where they are associated with shallow, slow-moving waters such as marshes, floodplains, rice paddies and vegetated pools.

Water Parameters:
Temperature: 24–28°C
pH Range: 6.5–7.5
Hardness: Soft to Moderate
Ammonia/Nitrite: 0 ppm
Nitrate: Kept low and stable

Temperament:
Semi-Aggressive

Male Bettas are strongly territorial towards other males and should not normally be housed together.

They can often be maintained with carefully selected peaceful community fish, although individual temperament varies and some specimens may prefer a more solitary setup.

Diet:
Carnivore / Insectivore

Offer a varied diet based around high-quality Betta pellets or granules.

Supplement with frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia and bloodworm.

Several small meals are preferable to one large feed, as Bettas have relatively small stomachs and can be prone to overfeeding.

Minimum Tank Size:
Approximately 25 litres for a single Betta, with larger aquariums preferred.

A heated, filtered aquarium provides far more stable conditions than very small containers and allows the fish to display more natural swimming and exploratory behaviour.

Behaviour & Activity:
The Assorted Betta is an inquisitive fish that spends much of its time exploring the aquarium, resting on leaves and investigating its surroundings.

As a labyrinth fish, it can breathe atmospheric air directly from the surface, so unrestricted access to the water surface is essential.

Provide gentle water movement, as long-finned individuals can struggle in excessively strong flow.

Floating plants, broad-leaved plants and sheltered resting areas are highly beneficial.

Community Suitability:
Semi-Aggressive

Betta splendens can sometimes be kept successfully in peaceful community aquariums, but tankmates should be chosen carefully.

Suitable companions may include small peaceful rasboras, Corydoras and other calm species that are unlikely to nip fins or compete aggressively.

Avoid other male Bettas, fin-nipping species and highly territorial fish.

Special Requirements or Care Notes:
Maintain a warm, stable aquarium with gentle filtration and easy access to the surface.

A fitted lid is recommended, as Bettas can jump and also benefit from warm, humid air above the water surface.

Avoid strong currents, particularly with long-finned varieties.

Decorations should be smooth and free from sharp edges that could tear delicate fins.

Regular partial water changes and stable water chemistry are important for maintaining fin condition and general health.

Because these fish are sold as assorted, colour, pattern and fin shape will vary naturally between individuals.

Suitable for:
Beginner to Intermediate
