Description

Assorted Acropora (Acropora sp.)

Assorted Acropora is a colourful SPS coral group valued for its branching growth, fine polyp detail and strong reef-building appearance. Acropora corals are highly sought after in mature reef aquariums, offering excellent structure, colour and growth potential when kept under strong lighting, high flow and consistently stable water parameters.

Common Name:
Assorted Acropora, Acropora Coral, Acro, Branching SPS Coral

Scientific Name (Latin):
Acropora sp.

Coral Type:
SPS Coral

Growth Form:
Branching, tabling or bushy growth form depending on the individual Acropora variety.

Water Type:
Marine

Origin / Natural Habitat:
Acropora corals are found across Indo-Pacific reef environments, especially on reef slopes, shallow reef crests and high-energy reef structures where they receive intense tropical light, strong water movement and very stable water conditions.

Water Parameters:
Temperature: 24–26°C
pH Range: 8.1–8.4
Salinity: SG 1.024–1.026
Alkalinity: 7–10 dKH
Calcium: 400–450 ppm
Magnesium: 1250–1350 ppm
Nitrate: Low but detectable
Phosphate: Low but detectable

Lighting:
HIGH
Assorted Acropora generally requires high-quality reef lighting to maintain strong colouration and healthy growth. Gradual acclimation is important, especially when moving it into brighter positions, as sudden changes in light intensity can cause paling, bleaching or tissue stress.

Flow:
HIGH
Provide strong, indirect and random flow to keep the branches clear of detritus and support healthy gas exchange. Acropora should not be blasted constantly from one direction, but it does benefit from turbulent, varied water movement across the colony.

Placement:
Place on stable middle to upper rockwork where the coral can receive strong light and high flow. Allow space around it for branching growth and avoid placing it too close to aggressive LPS corals, soft corals or species that may shade or sting it.

Temperament / Aggression:
Peaceful to semi-aggressive
Acropora does not usually have long sweeper tentacles, but it can compete for light and space as it grows. It is also vulnerable to being stung by more aggressive corals, so provide sensible spacing and keep it away from corals with strong sweeper tentacles.

Feeding:
Photosynthetic, but benefits from feeding
Assorted Acropora receives most of its energy from light through its symbiotic zooxanthellae. It may benefit from amino acids, fine coral foods and very small suspended particulate foods in a mature reef system, but heavy target feeding is not required.

Growth Rate:
Moderate to fast
In a stable, mature reef aquarium, Acropora can grow well and develop strong branching structure over time. Growth and colour are closely linked to consistent alkalinity, calcium, magnesium, lighting, flow and balanced nutrients.

Special Requirements or Care Notes:
Acropora is best suited to mature, stable reef aquariums with consistent water chemistry and strong export. Avoid sudden swings in alkalinity, salinity, temperature or nutrients, as Acropora can react quickly to instability. Keep phosphate and nitrate low but detectable, avoid detritus build-up between branches and inspect carefully before introduction. Coral dips are recommended where appropriate, particularly to reduce the risk of pests such as Acropora-eating flatworms and red bugs.

Experienced reefkeepers
