Description
Allard Clownfish (Amphiprion allardi)
The Allard Clownfish is a striking marine clownfish recognised for its deep brown to black body, warm orange-yellow face and fins, and contrasting white vertical bands. Bold, hardy and full of character, it makes an impressive addition to established marine and reef aquariums. Like many larger clownfish, it can become territorial as it matures, particularly when established as a pair or defending a host anemone.
Common Name:
Allard Clownfish, Allard's Clownfish
Scientific Name (Latin):
Amphiprion allardi
Maximum Size:
Approximately 13–15 cm
Water Type:
Marine
Origin / Natural Habitat:
The Allard Clownfish originates from the western Indian Ocean and is associated with tropical coral reef environments.
In the wild, it lives in close association with suitable host anemones, using them for shelter and protection while remaining within a relatively defined territory.
Water Parameters:
Temperature: 24–26°C
pH Range: 8.1–8.4
Salinity: SG 1.024–1.026
Nitrate: Low and stable
Ammonia/Nitrite: 0 ppm
Temperament:
Semi-Aggressive
The Allard Clownfish can be confident and territorial, especially once an individual or pair has established a preferred area of the aquarium.
Established pairs may become particularly defensive around their host anemone or breeding territory.
It is best housed with suitably robust marine fish that can tolerate its territorial behaviour.
Diet:
Omnivore
Offer a varied diet including quality marine pellets and flakes, frozen mysis, enriched brine shrimp, finely chopped prawn and other suitable marine foods.
Spirulina-based and algae-enriched foods can also be included regularly as part of a balanced diet.
Minimum Tank Size:
Approximately 150 litres
A larger aquarium is recommended where the fish will be maintained as a pair or alongside several other territorial species.
Behaviour & Activity:
The Allard Clownfish is an active but relatively site-attached species that usually establishes a preferred section of rockwork, coral structure or host anemone.
Pairs develop a clear social hierarchy, with the larger dominant fish becoming female.
Once established, the fish may remain close to its chosen territory and actively defend it from perceived intruders.
Reef Safe:
Reef Safe
The Allard Clownfish is generally considered reef safe and does not normally damage healthy corals, clams or established ornamental invertebrates.
Its primary compatibility consideration is territorial behaviour rather than coral safety.
Special Requirements or Care Notes:
Provide a mature marine aquarium with stable water chemistry, good filtration and plenty of secure rockwork.
A host anemone is not essential for successful aquarium care, although established fish may form a close association with a suitable anemone when available.
When keeping a pair, a clear size difference between individuals can help establish the natural dominance hierarchy.
Avoid keeping multiple established clownfish pairs together unless the aquarium is sufficiently large to provide separate territories.
Regular varied feeding and stable water quality help maintain strong colouration and healthy body condition.
A secure aquarium lid is recommended, particularly during acclimation.
Suitable for:
Beginner to Intermediate
Availability:
Availability can vary depending on season, collection area and supplier.
All images are a visual representation of the fish you will receive, made to be as accurate as possible. Please note that Mother Nature is a wonderful thing, and variation in patterns and colours will occur — that is part of the unique beauty of these animals.
