Description

Albino Paradise Gourami – Macropodus opercularis

The Albino Paradise Gourami is a striking freshwater labyrinth fish admired for its beautiful pale cream to pinkish-white colouration, reddish eyes and elegant flowing fins. This selectively bred variety of Macropodus opercularis offers a distinctive alternative to the traditionally coloured Paradise Fish. Hardy, inquisitive and full of personality, it makes an attractive centrepiece for mature temperate or cooler tropical aquariums. Although adaptable and relatively easy to maintain, this species can become territorial and is best kept with carefully selected tankmates.

Common Name:
Albino Paradise Gourami, Albino Paradise Fish, Albino Chinese Fighting Fish, Albino Paradise Macropodus

Scientific Name (Latin):
Macropodus opercularis

Strain / Form:
Albino captive-bred colour variety

Maximum Size:
Approximately 8–10 cm

Water Type:
Freshwater

Origin / Natural Habitat:
Wild Macropodus opercularis originate from East and Southeast Asia, including southern China, Taiwan, Vietnam and Laos.

In their natural habitat, Paradise Fish inhabit slow-moving streams, ponds, rice paddies, irrigation channels, marshes and heavily vegetated freshwater environments.

These habitats often experience seasonal temperature changes and contain dense aquatic vegetation, floating plants and sheltered areas.

The Albino Paradise Gourami is a selectively bred aquarium variety rather than a naturally occurring wild colour form.

In the aquarium, it thrives in mature planted environments with gentle water movement, floating vegetation, shaded retreats and open areas for swimming.

Water Parameters:
Temperature: 16–24°C
pH Range: 6.0–8.0
Hardness: Soft to moderately hard (approximately 5–20 dGH)
Ammonia/Nitrite: 0 ppm
Nitrate: Kept low and stable
Flow: Gentle preferred
Surface Access: Essential, as Paradise Gouramis possess a labyrinth organ and breathe atmospheric air.

Temperament:
Semi-Aggressive / Territorial

Albino Paradise Gouramis are confident, inquisitive fish that may display territorial behaviour, particularly as they mature.

Males can be aggressive towards one another and should not normally be housed together unless the aquarium is exceptionally spacious and carefully managed.

They may also chase other gouramis, Bettas or similarly shaped fish.

Their temperament can become more assertive during breeding, when males defend their bubble nests.

They are best kept individually, as a compatible pair or in carefully planned breeding arrangements.

Diet:
Omnivore / Insectivore

Albino Paradise Gouramis naturally feed on small aquatic insects, insect larvae, worms and other tiny invertebrates.

Offer high-quality tropical flakes, small floating pellets and specialist labyrinth fish foods as their staple diet.

Supplement regularly with frozen or live foods such as bloodworm, daphnia, brineshrimp, mosquito larvae and other appropriately sized aquatic invertebrates.

Occasional vegetable-based foods can also be included for dietary variety.

A balanced diet helps support healthy growth, fin condition and overall wellbeing.

Minimum Tank Size:
Approximately 75–90 litres for a single adult or compatible pair.

A longer aquarium with a footprint of at least 80 × 30 cm is preferred.

Larger aquariums are recommended for community setups or more complex social arrangements.

Provide plenty of plant cover, shaded areas and visual barriers to help reduce territorial behaviour.

Behaviour & Activity:
The Albino Paradise Gourami is an active, curious fish that spends much of its time exploring the middle and upper levels of the aquarium.

It regularly visits the surface to breathe atmospheric air using its labyrinth organ.

Males may display by spreading their fins, intensifying their posture and flaring their gill covers towards rival fish.

Like many labyrinth fish, Paradise Gouramis are bubble-nest builders. During breeding, the male constructs a nest at the water surface, often beneath floating plants.

The male may guard the nest and become particularly territorial while protecting the eggs.

Albino specimens can display subtle variations in cream, ivory and pinkish tones, with translucent or pale fins depending on the breeding line.

Their light colouration makes them particularly attractive against green aquarium plants, darker substrates and natural driftwood.

Community Suitability:
Semi-Aggressive Community Fish

Albino Paradise Gouramis are best suited to carefully planned temperate or cooler tropical community aquariums.

Potential tankmates include appropriately sized peaceful danios, robust rasboras, some larger peaceful barbs and suitable bottom-dwelling species that tolerate similar water temperatures.

Tankmates should be active enough to avoid persistent harassment but not aggressive or inclined to nip fins.

Avoid male Bettas, other territorial gouramis, delicate long-finned fish, very small nano fish, ornamental shrimp and species requiring consistently high tropical temperatures.

Very small fish or shrimp may be viewed as food.

Individual temperament can vary, so compatibility should always be monitored.

Special Requirements or Care Notes:
Albino Paradise Gouramis should be maintained in mature aquariums with stable water quality and gentle filtration. Unlike many tropical gouramis, this species does not require permanently warm water and generally benefits from cooler temperatures. An unheated indoor aquarium may be suitable where temperatures remain stable within the recommended range.

Avoid maintaining this species at consistently high tropical temperatures. Provide plenty of live plants, floating vegetation, driftwood and shaded retreats. Ensure unobstructed access to the water surface, as Paradise Gouramis need to breathe atmospheric air. A secure aquarium lid is strongly recommended because these fish can jump when startled. Albino varieties may benefit from shaded areas and floating plant cover, particularly under bright aquarium lighting.

Mature males are territorial and should not normally be kept together in smaller aquariums. Pairs should be monitored carefully, as males may chase females, especially during courtship and breeding. Provide sufficient cover so females can retreat from unwanted attention. If breeding occurs, males may construct bubble nests and protect the eggs and newly hatched fry. Paradise Gouramis should not be confused with peaceful community gouramis such as Honey Gouramis, as their temperament can be considerably more assertive. Regular water changes, appropriate stocking and a varied diet will help maintain their health, activity and fin condition.

Suitable for:
Beginner to intermediate, provided territorial behaviour and compatibility requirements are understood.

Availability:
Common to occasional, depending on supplier, size and availability of albino breeding strains.
