Description
Albino Long Fin Cory (Osteogaster aenea var.)
The Albino Long Fin Cory is a peaceful captive-bred form of the Bronze Cory, admired for its pale albino colouration, red eyes, extended fins and active bottom-dwelling behaviour. This hardy shoaling catfish is well suited to mature tropical community aquariums with soft sand, gentle tankmates and clean, stable water. Like all cory-type catfish, it should be kept in a group and must not be treated as a substitute for proper aquarium maintenance.
Common Name:
Albino Long Fin Cory, Albino Longfin Corydoras, Long Fin Albino Cory, Albino Bronze Cory
Scientific Name (Latin):
Osteogaster aenea var.
Older / Trade Name:
Corydoras aeneus, Corydoras aenea, Bronze Corydoras, Albino Corydoras
Strain / Form:
Albino Long Fin captive-bred colour and fin form
Maximum Size:
Approximately 6–7 cm
Water Type:
Freshwater
Origin / Natural Habitat:
Wild Osteogaster aenea are South American armoured catfish associated with slow to moderately flowing freshwater habitats, including streams, tributaries, floodplain areas and quiet marginal zones.
The Albino Long Fin Cory is a captive-bred aquarium form rather than a wild colour form.
In the aquarium, it does best in a mature setup with soft sand, shaded areas, plants, wood, smooth décor and open areas for foraging.
Water Parameters:
Temperature: 22–26°C
pH Range: 6.0–7.8
Hardness: Soft to moderately hard
Ammonia/Nitrite: 0 ppm
Nitrate: Kept low and stable
Substrate: Soft sand strongly preferred
Oxygenation: Good oxygenation recommended
Temperament:
Peaceful
Albino Long Fin Corys are peaceful shoaling catfish and should be kept with calm community fish.
They are not aggressive and are best kept in groups, where they show more natural foraging, resting and social behaviour.
Avoid boisterous or aggressive bottom dwellers that may outcompete or harass them.
Diet:
Omnivore / Bottom Feeder
Albino Long Fin Corys are foraging omnivores and need a varied sinking diet.
Offer quality sinking catfish pellets, cory tablets, micro pellets and fine sinking granules as the staple diet.
Supplement with frozen or live foods such as bloodworm, tubifex, daphnia, cyclops and brineshrimp.
They should not be expected to live on leftovers alone. Make sure food reaches the bottom, especially in busy community aquariums.
Minimum Tank Size:
Approximately 75–90 litres for a group
A longer aquarium with good bottom space is preferred over a tall aquarium.
Keep in a group of at least 6, with larger groups preferred where space allows.
Behaviour & Activity:
The Albino Long Fin Cory spends much of its time foraging across the substrate, resting in groups and exploring the lower levels of the aquarium.
It may occasionally dart to the surface to gulp air, which is normal behaviour for cory-type catfish.
The long-fin form has a more flowing appearance than standard Albino Corys, but the extended fins should be protected from fin-nipping tankmates.
Community Suitability:
Peaceful Community Fish
The Albino Long Fin Cory is ideal for peaceful tropical community aquariums.
Suitable tankmates include small to medium peaceful tetras, rasboras, danios, livebearers, dwarf gourami with care, peaceful rainbowfish, bristlenose plecos, otocinclus and other calm community fish.
Avoid aggressive cichlids, fin-nippers, large predatory fish, rough bottom dwellers, large loaches and any species likely to damage the long fins.
Special Requirements or Care Notes:
Keep this species in a group, not singly.
Soft sand is strongly recommended, as sharp gravel can damage the barbels and underside.
Provide open foraging areas as well as shaded cover.
Do not rely on them to clean the aquarium. They need proper sinking foods and good water quality.
Avoid poor substrate hygiene, high nitrate and unstable water conditions.
Long-finned forms should not be kept with fin-nipping species.
Albino forms may appreciate shaded areas and plant cover, as very bright aquariums can make them feel exposed.
Regular small water changes and clean substrate will help maintain barbels, fin quality and long-term health.
Suitable for:
Beginner to intermediate
Availability:
Common to occasional, depending on supplier and fin quality.
