African Angel (Centropyge acanthops)

The African Angel is a colourful and compact dwarf angelfish recognised for its deep blue body, vivid orange to yellow face and contrasting blue-edged fins. Active, inquisitive and well suited to established marine aquariums, it makes an attractive centrepiece for smaller reef or fish-only systems. Although generally manageable in temperament, it can become territorial towards similar dwarf angelfish and should be considered reef safe with caution due to the possibility of coral or clam nipping.

Origin / Natural Habitat:
The African Angel occurs in the western Indian Ocean and is associated with coral reefs, rocky reef areas and sheltered reef slopes.

It typically remains close to complex rockwork, caves and crevices where it can graze, shelter and establish a territory.

The African Angel is generally peaceful towards unrelated marine fish but can become territorial towards other dwarf angelfish, particularly similar Centropyge species.

It is usually best kept as a single specimen unless the aquarium is spacious and compatibility has been carefully planned.

Diet:

The African Angel naturally grazes on algae, detritus and small reef-associated foods.

In the aquarium, offer a varied diet including marine algae, spirulina-based foods, frozen mysis, enriched brine shrimp, finely chopped marine foods and quality angelfish pellets or flakes.

Regular access to natural grazing on mature rockwork is highly beneficial.

Approximately 150 litres

Its relatively small adult size makes the African Angel suitable for moderately sized marine aquariums, provided plenty of rockwork and swimming space are available.

Behaviour & Activity:
The African Angel is an active daytime fish that spends much of its time weaving through rockwork and grazing across reef surfaces.

Provide caves, overhangs and narrow crevices together with open swimming areas.

It may become increasingly confident and territorial once established, particularly around its preferred shelter.

Reef Safe:
With Caution

The African Angel can often be maintained successfully in reef aquariums, but individual behaviour varies.

Some specimens may nip at fleshy LPS corals, soft corals, zoanthids or clam mantles, while others show little interest in sessile invertebrates.

For this reason, it should be considered reef safe with caution rather than completely reef safe.

Special Requirements or Care Notes:
Provide a mature marine aquarium with established rockwork and plenty of natural grazing surfaces.

A varied diet containing both algae-based and meaty foods will help maintain strong colouration and healthy body condition.

Avoid housing it with multiple similar dwarf angelfish unless the aquarium provides sufficient space and separate territories.

Introduce it carefully into peaceful community systems, as established individuals can become territorial towards new arrivals.

Stable water chemistry, good filtration and regular feeding are important for long-term success.
