Description
Black Tiger Oscar (Astronotus ocellatus var.)
The Black Tiger Oscar is a bold captive-bred colour form of the Oscar Cichlid, admired for its dark body colour, tiger-style orange markings and intelligent, interactive behaviour. This large South American cichlid is a true centrepiece fish for experienced aquarists, but it requires a very large aquarium, powerful filtration and carefully chosen tankmates. Although often sold as juveniles, Oscars grow into large, heavy-bodied predators and must be planned for at adult size.
Common Name:
Black Tiger Oscar, Tiger Oscar, Black Oscar, Oscar Cichlid, Velvet Cichlid
Scientific Name (Latin):
Astronotus ocellatus var.
Strain / Form:
Black Tiger captive-bred colour form
Maximum Size:
Approximately 30–45 cm
Water Type:
Freshwater
Origin / Natural Habitat:
Wild Astronotus ocellatus are native to South America, where they occur across Amazon and Orinoco drainage systems and nearby floodplain habitats.
In the wild, Oscars inhabit slow-moving rivers, floodplain lakes, backwaters and marginal areas with submerged wood, roots, leaf litter and sheltered cover.
The Black Tiger Oscar is a captive-bred aquarium strain rather than a wild colour form.
Water Parameters:
Temperature: 24–28°C
pH Range: 6.0–7.5
Hardness: Soft to moderately hard
Ammonia/Nitrite: 0 ppm
Nitrate: Kept low and stable
Oxygenation: Strong filtration and good oxygenation required
Temperament:
Predatory / Semi-aggressive
Black Tiger Oscars are large, intelligent cichlids that are usually personable with their keeper but predatory towards smaller tankmates.
They may eat fish, shrimp or invertebrates small enough to fit in their mouth.
Adults can become territorial, especially around feeding areas, favourite shelters or breeding sites.
Diet:
Carnivore / Omnivore Predator
Black Tiger Oscars should be fed a varied diet of quality cichlid pellets, large carnivore pellets and suitable frozen or fresh meaty foods.
Good options include prawns, mussel, cockle, earthworms, krill, brineshrimp, bloodworm, chopped fish and occasional vegetable-based cichlid foods.
Avoid feeder fish, as they can introduce disease and are not a balanced long-term diet.
Avoid mammal or bird meats such as beef heart or chicken, as these are not suitable staple foods for long-term Oscar health.
Minimum Tank Size:
Approximately 450–600 litres for one adult Oscar
Larger aquariums are strongly recommended for pairs, mixed large cichlid communities or long-term adult care.
A wide aquarium with good floor space, strong filtration and open swimming room is essential.
Behaviour & Activity:
The Black Tiger Oscar is an intelligent, confident fish that often learns feeding routines and may recognise its keeper.
It spends much of its time cruising the middle and lower areas of the aquarium, investigating décor and interacting with its surroundings.
Oscars may dig, move décor, uproot plants and rearrange the aquarium, so all rockwork and wood should be secure.
Community Suitability:
Large Predator Community / Tank Buster
The Black Tiger Oscar is suitable only for large aquariums with robust tankmates.
Possible tankmates include large peaceful catfish, larger plecos, silver dollars, larger severums, some robust cichlids with care and other sizeable fish that cannot be swallowed.
Avoid small fish, shrimp, delicate community fish, fin-nippers, aggressive cichlids that may fight heavily, and any tankmate that cannot tolerate a large messy predator.
Special Requirements or Care Notes:
This is a large, messy cichlid that needs excellent filtration and regular water changes.
Plan for adult size from the start, not the juvenile size seen in shops.
Use secure décor, large wood and smooth rockwork, leaving plenty of swimming space.
Avoid sharp décor that may damage the fish during sudden movements.
A secure lid is recommended, as Oscars can jump or splash strongly when startled.
Live plants may be uprooted or damaged, so tough plants attached to wood or rock are usually more practical.
Do not overfeed, as Oscars are greedy and poor feeding habits can quickly affect water quality.
Keep nitrate low and avoid sudden changes in water chemistry.
This species is best suited to aquarists prepared for large fish care, heavy filtration and long-term commitment.
Suitable for:
Experienced
Availability:
Common to occasional, depending on supplier, size and colour strain.
