Discus are peaceful, social cichlids known for their round bodies and striking colours, but they’re also quite sensitive and best suited to experienced keepers. They thrive in groups of at least 5–6 in tall, spacious aquariums from around 250–300 litres upwards, with warm (around 28–30°C), very clean, soft and slightly acidic water. Gentle flow, excellent filtration and regular maintenance are essential, as discus do not tolerate swings in water quality. They’re generally community-safe with calm, warm-loving tank mates, but can become territorial when breeding. A varied diet of quality pellets, frozen and live foods will help keep them healthy and show off their full colour.
