Description
Tremper Albino Female Leopard Gecko
1. Housing
- Enclosure Size: For a single leopard gecko, a 20-gallon long aquarium is recommended. This provides ample space for hiding spots, a thermal gradient, and room to explore.
- Substrate: Use a substrate that is safe if ingested, such as paper towels, reptile carpet, or specially formulated reptile sand. Avoid small, loose substrates like regular sand to prevent impaction.
- Hides: Provide at least two hides – one on the warm side of the tank and another on the cool side. Consider adding a moist hide filled with damp moss or a paper towel to aid in shedding.
2. Lighting and Temperature
- Temperature: Maintain a thermal gradient with a warm side of 88-90°F (31-32°C) and a cool side around 75-80°F (24-27°C). Use a digital thermometer to monitor these temperatures.
- Heating: Under-tank heaters are ideal for leopard geckos. You may also use a basking light on one side of the tank if needed. Avoid heat rocks as they can cause burns.
- Lighting: Leopard geckos are nocturnal, so they don't require UVB lighting to metabolise calcium. However, providing a low-level UVB bulb can be beneficial to their overall health.
3. Humidity
- Humidity Level: Aim for a humidity level of around 30-40%. This can be achieved by misting the tank lightly when necessary and by maintaining a moist hide.
- Monitoring: Use a hygrometer to monitor the humidity levels within the enclosure to ensure they remain in the ideal range.
4. Diet and Water
- Diet: Feed a diet of live insects such as crickets, mealworms, and waxworms. Dust insects with a calcium supplement 2-3 times a week and a multivitamin supplement once a week.
- Water: Always provide a shallow dish of fresh water. Change it daily or as needed to ensure it's clean.
5. Handling and Socialisation
- Handling: Start handling your gecko gently and for short periods to get them accustomed to human interaction. Avoid handling during the first few weeks after bringing them home to allow them to settle in.
- Socialisation: Leopard geckos can learn to recognize their owners and may even enjoy being handled, but always be gentle and mindful of their body language.
6. Health and Maintenance
- Regular Checks: Regularly inspect your gecko for signs of shedding problems, weight loss, or any changes in behaviour, which could indicate health issues.
