Grammostola Pulchra (Brazilian Black) 2cm Sling - Image is for illustration purposes only!
Housing
- Enclosure: A small, secure container, such as a clear plastic vial or deli cup, works well for a sling this size. Make sure it has adequate ventilation to prevent stagnant air while keeping humidity levels stable.
- Substrate: Use a moisture-retaining substrate like coconut fiber or a mix of peat moss and vermiculite. Keep the substrate lightly moistened but not wet, with a depth of 2-3 inches to allow for burrowing.
- Humidity: Aim for a humidity level around 70-80%. You can maintain this by misting the enclosure lightly every few days. Be mindful to not overdo it, as excessive moisture can lead to mold growth.
- Temperature: Maintain a temperature range of 24-28°C (75-82°F). If your home is cooler, you may need a gentle heat source, like a heat mat under one side of the enclosure, to create a temperature gradient.
Feeding
- Diet: Feed your Brazilian Black sling small insects such as pinhead crickets, flightless fruit flies, or tiny roaches once or twice a week. Prey size should not be larger than the sling's abdomen.
- Water: Slings generally get enough moisture from their prey and the enclosure's humidity. However, you can mist one side of the enclosure to provide additional hydration, ensuring there are small droplets for the sling to drink from.
General Care
- Molting: Your sling will go through several molts as it grows. During these times, it may refuse food and become less active. Increase humidity slightly during molting and refrain from feeding until a couple of days after the molt is complete to allow the new exoskeleton to harden.
- Handling: It's best to minimise handling to reduce stress and the risk of injury to the tarantula. If you need to move the sling, do so gently, preferably coaxing it into a small container.
Social Needs
- Grammostola pulchra tarantulas are solitary animals and thrive best when housed alone. They do not require social interaction with other tarantulas.
