The Mossambicus Blenny is a small and attractive marine fang blenny recognised for its slender body, bright colouration and active swimming behaviour around reef structure. Like other Meiacanthus species, it possesses specialised venomous fangs used primarily for defence rather than hunting. Peaceful towards most suitable tankmates and generally reef safe, it is a distinctive choice for established marine aquariums with plenty of rockwork and sheltered areas.

Origin / Natural Habitat:
The Mossambicus Blenny occurs in the western Indian Ocean and is associated with coral reefs, rocky reef areas and sheltered coastal habitats.

It typically remains close to reef structure, using holes, crevices and caves for shelter while venturing into open water to feed.

The Mossambicus Blenny is generally peaceful towards unrelated marine fish but may defend its preferred shelter from similar blennies or closely related species.

Its venomous fangs are primarily defensive and help discourage larger predatory fish from attempting to consume it.

Diet:

Offer a varied diet of small marine foods including frozen mysis, enriched brine shrimp, copepods, finely chopped krill and quality marine flakes or pellets.

Small amounts of algae-based and spirulina-enriched foods can also be included to provide additional dietary variety.

Its relatively small adult size makes the Mossambicus Blenny suitable for moderately sized marine aquariums, provided plenty of rockwork and open swimming space are available.

Behaviour & Activity:
The Mossambicus Blenny is an active daytime fish that frequently swims above and around reef structure rather than remaining permanently perched.

It uses caves, holes and narrow rock crevices for shelter and sleeping.

Provide a combination of open swimming room and substantial rockwork containing numerous retreat areas.

A secure aquarium lid is recommended, as small blennies can jump when startled.

The Mossambicus Blenny is generally considered reef safe and does not normally damage healthy corals, clams or established ornamental invertebrates.

Its feeding behaviour centres primarily on small planktonic foods rather than coral tissue, making it suitable for mixed and coral-dominated reef aquariums.

Special Requirements or Care Notes:
Provide a mature marine aquarium with stable water chemistry and plenty of caves, crevices and secure rockwork.

Although generally peaceful, avoid overcrowding the aquarium with similar fang blennies unless sufficient territory is available.

Meiacanthus species possess venomous canine teeth used for defence. Bites to aquarists are uncommon, but unnecessary handling should be avoided.

Care should also be taken when transferring or netting the fish to minimise stress and accidental contact.

Avoid highly aggressive tankmates that may continually harass the blenny despite its defensive adaptations.

Good filtration, stable water quality and regular varied feeding will help maintain strong colour and healthy body condition.
