Description
Megaphobema Robustum (Columbian Giant) 3cm Sling - Image is for illustration purposes only!
Housing
- Enclosure: A small to medium enclosure, such as a clear plastic container with ventilation holes, is suitable for a sling of this size. The enclosure should allow for both adequate space for movement and areas for burrowing.
- Substrate: Use a deep layer of moisture-retaining substrate, such as coconut fiber or a mix of soil and peat, at least 4-5 inches deep to facilitate burrowing and help maintain humidity.
- Humidity: Megaphobema robustum requires high humidity, around 70-80%. Achieve this by misting the enclosure regularly but ensure proper ventilation to prevent mold growth.
- Temperature: Maintain a temperature range of 24-28°C (75-82°F). Use a heat mat if necessary, but make sure to monitor the temperature closely to avoid overheating.
Feeding
- Diet: Feed your Colombian Giant Redleg sling small insects such as pinhead crickets, small roaches, or mealworms once or twice a week. The prey size should be appropriate, not larger than the tarantula's abdomen.
- Water: While slings will get most of their moisture from their food, providing a shallow water dish or misting one side of the enclosure can help ensure they stay hydrated.
General Care
- Molting: Be aware that your sling will molt several times as it grows. During molting periods, it may refuse food, and its activity levels might decrease. Increase humidity slightly during molts and avoid feeding until a few days after the molt is complete.
- Handling: It's advisable to minimize handling, especially when the tarantula is young, to reduce stress and the risk of injury. If you must move the sling, do so gently and with care.
Social Needs
- Megaphobema robustum is a solitary species and should be kept alone. They do not require and should not be provided with companionship from other tarantulas.
Observation and Adjustment
- Regularly observe your tarantula and its enclosure to ensure a healthy living environment. Adjustments to humidity, temperature, and feeding may be necessary based on your observations and the tarantula's behaviour.
