Housing
- Enclosure: A 20-gallon vertical terrarium is suitable for an adult due to their arboreal nature. For juveniles, a smaller setup can work but plan for growth.
- Substrate: A mixture of peat moss, coconut fiber, or reptile carpet works well. It's absorbent and easy to clean.
- Decoration: Provide plenty of climbing structures and hiding spots using branches, cork bark, and foliage (either live or artificial). This helps replicate their natural environment and supports their climbing habits.
Temperature and Humidity
- Temperature: Maintain a gradient of 72-78°F (22-25°C) during the day. Nighttime temperatures can drop to around 68-70°F (20-21°C). Avoid temperatures above 85°F (29°C).
- Humidity: Keep the humidity level between 50-70%. Mist the enclosure once or twice daily to maintain these levels. Monitor with a hygrometer.
Diet
- Commercial Diets: There are specially formulated gecko diets available that provide complete nutrition and should make up the bulk of their diet.
- Supplement with Insects: Offer gut-loaded crickets, dubia roaches, or mealworms 1-2 times per week. Insects should be dusted with a calcium supplement to prevent nutritional deficiencies.
- Occasional Treats: Small amounts of pureed fruit (like banana, mango, or peach) can be offered occasionally as a treat.
General Care
- Handling: These geckos can be skittish and may require time to acclimate to handling. Begin with short, gentle handling sessions, gradually increasing as they become more comfortable.
- Water: Provide a shallow water dish and ensure fresh water is available daily. They may not drink often from the dish, but it's important for maintaining humidity.
- Cleanliness: Regularly clean the enclosure, removing waste and uneaten food promptly. Perform a thorough cleaning and substrate replacement monthly.
Health and Wellbeing
- Observation: Regularly check your gecko for signs of stress or illness, such as refusal to eat, lethargy, or skin issues. Stress can be minimized by providing a secure environment with plenty of hiding places.
Special Considerations
- The High Red Super Blotch Gargoyle Gecko's vibrant colour and pattern are a significant part of its appeal. Lighting in the enclosure can affect the perception of these colours but should not be too bright as to cause stress. Use a low-intensity UVB light to simulate natural daylight cycles and support their health.
