GENERAL CARE
Genus, Species Correlophus ciliatus
Adult Size 15-25 cm (with tail)
Habitat Rainforest
Lifespan 15-20 Years
Habitat:
1. Enclosure: A vertically oriented terrarium is ideal (minimum size 20 gallons for an adult), as these geckos are arboreal. Use a mixture of substrates like coconut fiber and sphagnum moss to maintain humidity.
2. Temperature: Daytime temperatures should range from 72-78°F (22-25°C), with a slight drop at night. Avoid temperatures above 80°F (27°C), as they can cause stress.
3. Humidity: Maintain 60-80% humidity. Mist the enclosure twice daily to ensure proper hydration and humidity levels.
Diet:
1. Primary Diet: Crested gecko diets (commercially available powders that are mixed with water) are recommended. They provide complete nutrition and are easy to prepare.
2. Supplements: Occasional treats like crickets or other small insects can be offered. Dust insects with calcium and vitamin supplements.
3. Feeding Schedule: Feed in the evening as they are nocturnal. Young geckos should be fed daily, while adults can be fed every other day.
Lighting:
1. UVB Lighting: Not strictly necessary if a complete diet is provided, but can be beneficial for overall health and well-being.
2. Day/Night Cycle: A consistent light/dark cycle is important. Use natural lighting or a low-wattage bulb for 12 hours a day.
Water:
1. Water Dish: Always have a shallow dish of water available.
2. Misting: Regular misting helps maintain humidity and provides a water source, as they prefer to drink droplets from surfaces.
Social and Behavioural Needs:
1. Social Structure: Crested Geckos can be kept alone or in small groups with one male and multiple females. Never house two males together.
2. Environmental Enrichment: Provide climbing branches, vines, and foliage (live or artificial) for enrichment.
Health:
1. Regular Check-Ups: Schedule annual check-ups with a vet experienced in reptiles.
2. Common Health Issues: Watch for signs of metabolic bone disease, skin infections, and stress.
Handling:
1. Temperament: Generally docile and can tolerate gentle handling.
2. Caution: They can drop their tails if frightened or stressed. The tail does not regrow.
This is a basic care guide, and it's important to do thorough research and consult with a reptile specialist or veterinarian to ensure the proper care and well-being of your Flame Crested Gecko.
