Description
CB Yellow Collared Lizard (Male)
Enclosure
- Size: A minimum of a 40-gallon breeder tank is recommended for a single lizard, as they are very active and require space to run, climb, and bask.
- Substrate: Use a mix of sand and fine gravel or commercial reptile bedding that mimics their natural arid environment. Avoid substrates that can cause impaction if ingested.
- Decoration: Provide plenty of rocks and branches for climbing and basking. Ensure the setup allows for a temperature gradient and has multiple hiding spots.
Temperature and Lighting
- Temperature: The basking spot should be between 95°F to 100°F (35°C to 38°C), with a cooler area around 75°F to 85°F (24°C to 29°C). Night temperatures can drop to 65°F to 75°F (18°C to 24°C). Use thermometers to monitor temperatures in different parts of the enclosure.
- Lighting: UVB lighting is crucial for calcium metabolism and overall health. Provide 10-12 hours of UVB light daily alongside a basking light to simulate day and night cycles.
Humidity
- Levels: Maintain humidity levels between 30% to 40%. This species thrives in relatively dry conditions, so avoid excessive humidity. Use a hygrometer to monitor humidity within the enclosure.
Diet and Water
- Diet: Yellow Collared Lizards are primarily insectivores. Offer a variety of insects, including crickets, mealworms, and occasionally small amounts of greens and fruits. Dust food with calcium and vitamin supplements according to the product directions or a veterinarian's advice.
- Water: Provide fresh water in a shallow dish. Though they may not drink often, it's important for hydration and occasional bathing.
Handling and Behaviour
- Handling: While they can become accustomed to handling, minimize stress by allowing the lizard to come to you. Quick movements and forced handling can cause stress. Start with short handling sessions, gradually increasing as the lizard becomes more comfortable.
- Behaviour: Observe for normal active behaviour and appetite. Lethargy, lack of appetite, or other changes could indicate health issues, necessitating a vet visit.
Health and Maintenance
- Health Checks: Regularly check for signs of good health, such as clear eyes, active behavior, and a strong appetite. Be aware of signs of illness, including lethargy, weight loss, or discharges from the eyes, nose, or mouth.
- Enclosure Maintenance: Regularly clean and disinfect the habitat to prevent disease. Replace water daily and clean food dishes regularly.
