Description
Berber Skink (Eumeces schneideri)
Habitat and Enclosure:
1. Enclosure Size: A 20-gallon long terrarium is suitable for one Berber Skink, but larger is better, especially for multiple skinks.
2. Temperature: Maintain a temperature gradient with a basking spot around 95°F and a cooler end of the enclosure around 75°F. Night temperatures can drop to about 70°F.
3. Lighting: UVB lighting is recommended to aid in vitamin D3 synthesis, which is essential for calcium metabolism.
4. Substrate: Use a substrate like aspen shavings, coconut fiber, or a sand/soil mix that allows for digging and burrowing.
5. Humidity: They require moderate humidity levels (around 40-60%). This can be achieved through regular misting.
6. Environmental Enrichment: Provide hiding spots, a shallow water dish, and branches or rocks for climbing.
Diet:
1. Primary Diet: Berber Skinks are omnivores. Their diet should include a variety of insects (like crickets, mealworms, and roaches) and vegetables (like leafy greens and squash).
2. Supplements: Dust food with calcium and vitamin supplements regularly, especially for younger skinks.
3. Feeding Frequency: Adults can be fed every other day, while juveniles should be fed daily.
