Widespread in the tropical Indian Ocean, ranging east to Sumatra. Previously reported from the Indian Ocean and western Indonesian region as Chaetodon unimaculatus, its Pacific sibling. Coral reef flats to deep slopes. Adults usually swim in pairs, sometimes forming small groups. Identified by its bright yellow body with rounded black spot on the sides. Similar to C.unimaculatus, but apart from being mostly yellow, the black band over the head is about pupil-width. Juveniles have a white-edged, black ocellus that is not vertically elongated like that in C.unimaculatus. Length to 20cm.
