CB Albino Horned Frog (Ceratophrys cranwelli)
Housing
- Enclosure: A single adult Albino Horned Frog can be comfortably housed in a 10-20 gallon terrarium. These frogs are not very active, so floor space is more critical than vertical space.
- Substrate: A moist, soft substrate is ideal for mimicking their natural habitat. Coconut fiber or sphagnum moss are excellent choices. Keep the substrate moist (but not waterlogged) to help maintain humidity.
- Temperature and Humidity: Aim for a temperature gradient of 75-85°F (24-29°C) with a drop to 70-75°F (21-24°C) at night. Humidity should be kept around 60-80%. A hygrometer can help monitor these conditions.
Diet and Water
- Diet: Albino Horned Frogs are voracious eaters. Their diet can include appropriately sized crickets, mealworms, waxworms, and even pinkie mice for adult frogs. Feed juveniles daily and adults 2-3 times a week.
- Water: Provide a shallow water dish for soaking. The water should be dechlorinated and changed regularly to ensure cleanliness.
Health and Maintenance
- Cleaning: Regularly clean the enclosure to prevent mold and bacterial growth. A complete substrate change should be done monthly, with spot cleaning as needed.
- Health Monitoring: Watch for signs of health issues, such as lack of appetite, lethargy, or skin problems. Consult a vet experienced with amphibians if any health concerns arise.
Handling
- Interaction: Albino Horned Frogs are not typically handled due to their delicate skin and stress-prone nature. Observing them in their habitat is often more enjoyable and less risky for the frog.
Special Considerations
- Colouration: The albino morph, with its distinct lack of pigmentation, may be more sensitive to light than other morphs. Ensure the enclosure is not placed in direct sunlight and consider using low-intensity lighting.
- Feeding Caution: Be cautious during feeding as these frogs have a powerful bite and might accidentally bite fingers if hand-fed.
