Description

Avicularia Variegata- Amazon Giant Pink Toe

Housing

  • Enclosure: A small, secure container such as a plastic vial, deli cup, or small terrarium with ventilation holes is ideal for an Avicularia variegata sling. The enclosure should be taller rather than wide, as this is an arboreal species. Provide plenty of cross ventilation and climbing structures like cork bark or twigs.

  • Substrate: Use a thin layer (1–2 inches) of moisture-retaining substrate like coconut fiber or peat moss. This species doesn’t burrow much but the substrate should still hold some humidity.

  • Humidity: Maintain a humidity level of around 70–80%. Lightly mist one side of the enclosure every few days, making sure not to over-saturate to prevent mold. Good ventilation is important to avoid stale, damp air.

  • Temperature: A temperature range of 22–26°C (72–79°F) is suitable for Avicularia variegata. Room temperature is often fine unless your home is consistently cooler.

Feeding

  • Diet: Feed your Avicularia variegata sling small prey items such as pinhead crickets, flightless fruit flies, or tiny roaches once or twice a week. Prey should be smaller than the sling’s abdomen to avoid injury.

  • Water: The sling will get most of its hydration from its prey and water droplets. Lightly mist foliage or enclosure walls to provide droplets for drinking, but avoid soaking the enclosure.

General Care

  • Molting: Your sling will molt several times as it grows. Before molting, it may stop eating and hide in its web. Slightly increase humidity during this time and do not feed until a few days after the molt to allow the new exoskeleton to harden.

  • Handling: Handling is not recommended. Avicularia species are delicate and can jump quickly. If you need to move your sling, use a catch cup or a soft brush to guide it gently.

Social Needs

  • Avicularia variegata are solitary and should always be housed alone. They do not require companionship and may attack or eat other tarantulas if kept together.
